Theory of coaching in 4 steps

Every dedicated coach goes prepared to the training practice with his team, and also with clear organization plan.  He takes into consideration all the possible factors to have successful and valuable training session. There are few situations when prediction is not possible, such as absence of a player in the last moment or weather conditions, so coach must adapt to the new situation.

While planning training session, the first thing coach is aware of is training objective, available players and playing spaces. Number of players playing in each activity must be appropriate for the session focus. Every player must be involved. No long queuing. The playing spaces for each activity must be appropriate for the ability level. Better boys need smaller area for faster and more fluent play, less skilful players need larger area as they need more time to make the move. Playing shape and field orientation for each activity has to be appropriate for the session focus. When possible, the playing spaces should be marked out in advance. All the players must be included in the activities, or frequently rotated. The goalkeepers have to be included in the activities; they are important part of the team and should do as many activities together with the rest of the team. They have to play both as goalkeepers and field players.

MAKE YOUR TRAINING SESSION CLEAR

Introduction of activities takes the crucial place in daily preparing of the training session. Coach has to spend appropriate time to organize players and introduce activities. It has to be short, mentioning previous training topic and progression of the next session. Nothing more concerning detailed coaching information should be given during the introduction of activities. Coach has to demonstrate or walk through any new activities to help player’s understanding. Players must be aware of the way in which they can reach objectives of the training session.

BALANCE BETWEEN CHALLENGE AND SUCCESS

Development and progression of activities allows flow of activities. Session must be in a balance between challenge and success. It is not beneficial for players’ progress to have too easy tasks; the same is with hard ones, leading to failure. Any proposed conditions must be appropriate for the session focus. Conditions of games and exercises must be changed to improve quality. Adjustments must be made to the playing spaces, where necessary, or timed to improve quality in play.

IMPORTANCE OF STOPAGGES

Stoppages are main part for coaching itself as it is a time when coach addresses objectives, corrections or encouragement. Timing of stoppages must be appropriate to the session’s focus and activity flow. Stoppages should generally address the most relevant problems. Activities should start, being monitored, assessed and then stopped if the coach feels that the session is not going according to the plan and toward the objective of the training.

PAY ATTENTION ON DETAILS

Coaching mannerisms are creating training atmosphere. His approach must be professional and he should treat players in that manner. Body language must present confidence, and voice must have an impact on intensity and motivation in training. Coach must be in a position on the ground so he can observe all the players.

Coach, like a player, learns and gains experience by doing things. The dedication and passion provide one with satisfaction.
